It is with luminous bits of brightly colored glass and gleaming mirror that Imre G. Kohan constructs his fascinating works. Glass affords the artist a unique opportunity to work directly with color and light in a wholly different way from traditional media. Kohan’s compositions are powerful; with subjects that range from portraits to pure abstractions, they are delicate and sparkle like jewels. Each piece is unique, dictated by the puzzle-like quality of his creative process. Born in Hungary, Kohan immigrated to West Germany during the Communist rule in his homeland. While there Kohan studied industrial design and advertising at the Werbefachliche Akademie in Stuttgart. In 1997, after experimenting with many different materials, Kohan discovered his medium: the glass mosaic. He chose this unusual medium “because it's one of the most amazing branches of fine art,” Kohan explains, “no other technique can attain such sparkling colors, deep within the heart of the material.” Kohan lives and works on the Maltese Islands.

Dear Jen,

Your site has been very informative.....I have a question that I haven't seen before. I want to mosaic the sides of an old freezer to make a planter that will stay outside year round. I am having difficulty finding an adhesive that will hold the tiles to the freezer. Do you have any ideas?

Thank you for your time and help.

Peace,
Now we're going to glue the glass onto the base. On this backer board, I'm going to use a wood glue. It's an interior/exterior wood glue. I put some glue out on a piece of plastic and I use a popsicle stick to butter the glass. And make sure you get plenty on there. And then I place that on the mosaic and press down very firmly. Ok?

Now, what I want to do is add some smaller pieces around it. so what I'm going to do is butter sections of the baseboard instead of buttering the glass. I butter the baseboard and press the small sections of glass into it.

So we're going to use these little pieces to go around it. And you want- it's good to spread a handful of cut glass out so you can get the right shapes that you want. And I'm going to use squares. And when you place them you want to have at least a minimum of a popsicle apart and you press it down into the glue.

Ok, and then you want to use a tool or stick to- the glass will move around a little bit until it starts to set up and you want to make sure that you have it accurately placed. You go back around and you move it until you get it just like you want it.

I had a problem nipping a particular color of Italian vitreous glass this morning. It was a metallic veined color called clover, which is sold by Mosaic Merchantile. After several pieces shattered I started to wonder if it was the particular color that was the problem. I experimented with other colors using the same pair of nipppers (Mosaic Merchantile basic) and they broke just like normal. Has anyone had a problem cutting a particular color before?

I'm currently renovating an old building in downtown and we took up the old vinyl floor yesterday only to find white mosaic tile with red swastica emblems everywhere!!!

First, does anyone know why? Secondly, what options do I have? Can you stain the tile a different color?

I just started using styrofoam to create a 3D appearance with wall hangings.
It works really well. I am not sure of the long term wear and tear.
Especially in the form of a ball. Please post your results.
i purchased the program on ebay, as it was a few dollars less than buying direct. mosaicmercantile.com sells it as well, or did. i think the site is tilecreator.com, and then you get directed from there..they blended w/a company called 'though fish' for tech help...hope this helps...lisa

Hi Bren,

Styrofoam should be fine. I haven't actually used it myself but have seen it used and am interested in doing some more sculptural pieces with it. It might be worth contacting the manufacturer and talking to them about longevity - and maybe just do a few experiments. - not much help I know but i have definitely seen it used inside and out!

Hi,

I have made a few mosaic floors in the past but always using large porcelain tiles which I break up. Whilst these are ok, the colours tend to be very earthy. muted tones and I want something more colourful. I don't want to use actual mosaic tiles as I prefer the random shapes to the geometric. They need to be frost proof and fairly slip resistant and in uk. Any suggestions gratefully recieved! Thanks
