Mosiac Artist Imre G. Kohan Exhibits in New York
Panta Rhei, Stained Glass and Mosaic, 23.5" x 23.5"
It is with luminous bits of brightly colored glass and gleaming mirror that Imre G. Kohan constructs his fascinating works. Glass affords the artist a unique opportunity to work directly with color and light in a wholly different way from traditional media. Kohan’s compositions are powerful; with subjects that range from portraits to pure abstractions, they are delicate and sparkle like jewels. Each piece is unique, dictated by the puzzle-like quality of his creative process. Born in Hungary, Kohan immigrated to West Germany during the Communist rule in his homeland. While there Kohan studied industrial design and advertising at the Werbefachliche Akademie in Stuttgart. In 1997, after experimenting with many different materials, Kohan discovered his medium: the glass mosaic. He chose this unusual medium “because it's one of the most amazing branches of fine art,” Kohan explains, “no other technique can attain such sparkling colors, deep within the heart of the material.” Kohan lives and works on the Maltese Islands.
